What does FSC mean?

FSC® stands for FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL®. In Danish, Skovforvaltningsråd.

The FSC® label is the consumer's assurance of responsible forestry. This requires certification. All those with a certification are inspected at least once a year by means of an inspection visit, and in addition, unannounced inspections are also carried out as needed.

FSC® is an international non-profit labeling scheme for wood and paper. FSC® neither produces nor sells products. You will find the FSC® label on wood and paper products that you can buy with a clear conscience.

You can, because in an FSC® forest no more wood is cut down than the forest can reproduce. At the same time, FSC® ensures that animal and plant life are protected, and that the people who work in the forest are trained and receive proper safety equipment and pay.

You will find FSC® forests all over the world, from our native Danish forests to the rainforests of South America and the bush forests of East Africa.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Up to 20% of the world's human-caused CO2 emissions come from the cutting down and burning of forests. This is equivalent to the amount of CO2 that it would cost to send 8 million people by plane from London to New York every single day. This is because, according to the FAO, an area of forest equivalent to an area three times the size of Denmark disappears every year.

The areas where the forest was are often converted to other uses such as fields or plantations. It therefore makes perfect sense to take care of the forests and ensure that future generations can benefit from them. However, this does not mean that we should stop using the forests or wood altogether. Wood is a CO2-friendly material if it has a responsible origin.

So it makes good sense to use wood and paper as we usually do, it just has to be done with care – with the FSC label.

FSC®-certified forest

In an FSC®-certified forest, trees are felled gently and widely, so that the forest cover is kept as constant as possible. At the same time, rare plants are preserved and springs and streams are protected.

In this way, the forest's drinking water and watercourses are naturally preserved and protected from pollution. However, in some forests it may be permissible to cleanly drift a continuous area at a time – for example in coniferous forests, as these are sensitive to selective felling.

In these forests, corridors must still be worked on to ensure that animals and plants can spread between areas. And of course, the rest of the strict FSC® rules must still be met – such as conserving areas in the forest, protecting endangered species of animals and plants, etc.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

FSC® protects indigenous and local populations in FSC-certified forests around the world – from the Sami in northern Sweden to the Indians in South America. In an FSC®-certified forest, indigenous people are guaranteed the right to use the forests as they have always done. They are also allowed to protect sacred sites and can maintain their homes and hunting grounds.

Locals also have the opportunity to work in the forest, which means that local people can earn an income from the forest they live in, and at the same time have the opportunity to receive training in forestry. In addition, a percentage of the total income from the forest must be used to support the local community. This can mean support for schools, infrastructure, water supply and the like. FSC® also ensures that forest workers have the right to assemble, so they can form unions. At the same time, they are guaranteed fair wages, safety equipment and other social rights.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The FSC® system is unique because it takes into account economic, environmental and social interests. This means that when you buy FSC®-certified products, they are products that have been traded under normal and legal market conditions and not as a subsidy scheme for the producer.

This economic weighting is of great importance for the protection of the world's forests. It means that forest owners receive a decent price for their wood and are therefore not tempted to cut down and burn the forests to make a quick buck.

On the other hand, forest owners are motivated to manage the forests with care in order to continue to make money from them in the future. In this way, future generations can also benefit from the forests while protecting animals and plants.
